Threads of Community

Spanning an incredible 77 feet, Camila Leão’s “Threads of Community” captures the vibrant spirit of Towson. It can be found on the south side of Chopt in the Dulaney Plaza shopping center. While creating the work, Leão was struck by how deeply connected the people of Towson feel to their local identity.

“From its vibrant businesses to its sports teams, there’s a clear pride in being a part of Towson,” she says.

Throughout the mural, you’ll spot the iconic Maryland crab greeting you with excitement, a lively local rockfish, and black-eyed Susans painted in bright yellow that seem to gently sway. Camila also included subtle details, like the flow of thread that weaves these elements together, symbolizing the unbreakable bonds within the community. In her words, these symbols are a “reminder of how closely nature and community are intertwined.”

When seen up close, you can almost feel the cheerful energy of the mural through its colorful design. The intricate textures and playful details invite visitors to stop and take a closer look. Before you go, don’t miss the black, arched window that surrounds the sun—it’s the perfect frame for a selfie!

Camila Leão, a multimedia artist born in São Paulo, Brazil, and currently based in Baltimore, Maryland, grounds her work in themes of community, diversity, empowerment, and environmental awareness. Her deep connection to community and nature shines through every brushstroke, offering visitors a moment to reflect on what makes Towson so unique and how art can bring people together.
